(Meredith) – Are you looking to update your home but struggling to find inspiration?
Hannah Baker, home editor at Drew and Jonathan Scott’s Reveal Magazine, has the top three tips to get you started.
First, consider what colors you want to define and ground your space. Baker suggests starting by figuring out what colors you are drawn to in nature, art and fashion to see if there are any consistencies.
“Maybe you’re always finding that you’re drawn to really calming neutrals, or maybe it’s brighter, more vibrant colors, and that can be a jumping off point so that it’s easier for you to then build a palette for the rest of your home,” Baker said.
When it comes to color, if you want to experiment but you’re unsure of fully committing to a color, consider just painting the room to test it out.
“Paint can really transform a space. You don’t have to drop a lot of money on those higher-ticket items like a really colorful sofa,” Baker said.
The second big tip is to collect a lot of inspiration – flag some of your favorite rooms in magazines, design books, and save inspiration to Pinterest and Instagram.
And third, Baker said to be wary of trends.
“Often times, the trendier something is, the shorter a lifespan it’s going to have,” Baker said.
Instead of using trends for big-ticket items, think about using them for something like an area rug, curtains, or other accessories that are easily swappable and isn’t going to break the bank if you decide that you’re over it in a month.
When it comes to trends, you should also consider if you are drawn to a trend because you actually love it, or if you are only wanting to use it because it’s what everybody else is doing.
“You know, you’re the one that’s going to have to live with all of your design decisions every day, no one else is,” Baker said. “So, you should really love everything that’s in your home.”
